92 740 turbo-auto trans goes into neutral all of sudden after driven for a period 700 1992

I have a friend that has a 92 740t,he says that his auto trans goes into a neutral-like condition after driving the car for a while,he can move the shifter around but nothing happens untill it sits for a while?
