Central door locking system 200 1988

I own a 4-door Volvo, 240 DL sedan (270,000 miles). Lately, I've been experiencing problems with my central door locking system. When keyed to lock, only the driver's side door lock engages. The other three door locks don't respond and must be depressed manually. HOWEVER, when unlocking the system, the unresponsive three door locks react wonderfully. In other words, the three doors won't lock automatically, but they will unlock. Any thoughts or advice? Is this a costly repair?
