88 740 STEERING COUPLER SHAFT U-JOINT INSTALLATION/REMOVAL, PLEASE HELP! 700

Hello again folks!

I suspect that my steering column shaft u-joint coupler links is in need of replacement. How does one go about removing/replacing this part? The vehicle is a 88 740 wagon (non-turbo). The steering is terrible stiff/dead (see my other recent posts)! FCP GROTON'S other parts section (foreigncarpartsonline.com) has this part for 124.00. Is the job a long one and or what difficulties might I encounter? The dealer claims that the design was changed and that you can't obtain the upper u-joint, in that one must replace the whole rack/column, hmmmmm! Yet the lower u-joint coupler is available. The dealer is not going to happen, does the upper one ever give problems? I am very mechanically incline. I just seek a little insight. Please Help!
