Fuel Tank Gasket 700 1990

I had to replace the fuel pump, Regina system, and I can't get the gasket and sending unit-pump assembly back in the tank. I've tried putting the gasket in the tank first and it just goes into the tank with the assembly and with the gasket on the assembly I can't get it all the way down to get the ring threads started. I have greased the gasket well with petroleum jelly. Chilton's and Haynes are no help.

Any suggestions appreciated. I have to get this one running so that I can replace the control arm on my 1991 240 wagon.

This site makes owning a computer worth while.
