89 760 AirCon Failure 700 1989

Hi, I have an 89 v6 760GLE (UK). We have just had our first day of nice weather so I thought it was time for the Air Con.

Switching the A/C on illuminates the green light on the control panel.

However the compressor does not seem to engage. The internals seem to spin OK, the clutch pushes in and out but does not attempt to engage when activated. It does not even cycle in and out (as described in other questions). Any ideas of how I can try to force the system to engage? I have checked the fuses in the cabin (19?)and they seem OK. Any ideas on how to get the old girl's aircon back up and running.

Also the system was recharged and the condesor changed about 10 months ago. So hopefully there should be enough charge in the system.
