CIS problem, help PLEASE. 200

Ok, this is not a Volvo question, but I need help.
My wife's VW Golf has the CIS system, and I cannot find any boards to help me diagnose it.
After a small amount of driving, under anything but very light throttle in gear, the car will sputter and try to stall. If I turn off the car and then restart it (kinda like Windows...) it'll run fine again for a while.
I think the filter may be a part of the fault...but I'm lost for any other kind of help.
Please help if you can. I'm really worried about her driving in this car, and my brick is broken.
