Cleaning up the engine bay - what works? 200

I am trying to get the under the hood region nice and clean before taking the 242 to an event. Heard lots of ideas on cleaning sludge, dirt, oil etc. Full strength Simple Green and a toothbrush, carb cleaner, Spray Nine, (something) Purple, then Armor All hoses and other stuff. Some say to keep the engine running when spraying or rinsing, cover the distributor and coil, etc etc.

What works best for you? I prefer things that are non-toxic or hazardous to certain parts and can be done in the driveway.
