Do you clutch when you push the OD button? The owners manual recommends it so I try to do it most of the time. If I'm cruising under no load, sometimes I won't clutch though. I realize clutches are easier to rebuild than overdrives but the same unit engages and disengages on the automatics all the time and the OD units seem to last pretty good on the AW series transmissions.
