760 turbo wagon engine acceleration 700 1989

Can someone tell me why my car accelerated out of control - the engine revving
loudly as in a airline 747 jet? I had to turn off the ignition to stop the car.
Brakes had absolutely no effect. Emergency brake - nada. Car in park - zilch.
Frightening to say the least. I was told that I need a new timing belt to coorect this situation. I was also told to get another engine. Does someone have an answer? My foot was NOT on the gas pedal before the "joyride."
