740 2.3 carb 1987 700 1987

Hello All, Am I alone in thinking that old Volvos are actually quite unreliable? I always had the impression these cars were ultra reliable, but my experience doesn't bear this out. I have realised that not a single week goes by when I haven't needed to mess with something on the engine. Its usually electrics, or rubber hoses, either of which seem so interdependet on each other that the slightest damage or wear will cause an awkward problem. Now, a new hassle...the cast alloy alternator brackets have sheared off! Sorry about the moan, but I am really getting fed up. My 1987 740gle automatic, carb, non-turbo now has a miss at (and just above) idle, which goes away as soon as the revs are up. Otherwise, it pulls fine. Also, there is often the smell of unburned fuel after switching off the engine, wonder what causes that? Any ideas about either or both of these problems? If not, want to buy a beautifully clean and well serviced Volvo from a pissed-off owner?
