Hello, I'm Australian and just signed up to this very useful list,
Can anyone answer these questions? Will my recently acquired 1980 244 GL (B21E, manual transmission) run on unleaded fuel? Super or standard? And is 400km per tank (60 litre capacity I believe) a reasonable consumption? Being shamefully ignorant of these things I just did the figures and calculate that this may be about what a big modern V8 would use. Any ideas why it might be so thirsty, given that it seems to run fine? I'm also close to the stage where I have to choose whether or not to proceed with a $500 rust job at the passenger corner of the windscreen, or just drive the car till the rego runs out and "put it down." The thought really pains me. I really like this car and would like to keep it for at least a couple more years. I feel the rust may be the only major problem I face, though have to admit that sometimes the car does odd things electrically: the running lights switch themselves on and off, the temp gauge also. And the transmission crunches slightly when changing up, going hard uphill (sick synchro, I'm told). But I am willing to believe that these are minor old-age weaknesses that will not get too bad given reasonable care driving, or not too expensive to fix if they go wrong. Am I kidding myself? Is the wiring probably shot? And, are the claims of "rust converter" manufacturers accurate? Does this kind of paint really convert rust to solid metal? How good is it? Sorry for so many dumb questions.
thanks in advance,
hoping to save my car,
Mark
