AW 70 Trans problems - Can't check fluid 200 1989

I experienced some trans problems a few days ago: Delayed shifting, and bucking like it was going to stall, but it didn't stall. Engine idled ok when I put it threw it in neutral. Someone told me to check for a low fluid level.

But Bentley says not to start the engine if the transmission is too low on fluid, because it will damage the trans.

So, if the problem is from a low fluid level, then how can I start the engine to check the fluid level to determine that, because it will damage the trans? How do you check the trans fluid level without running the engine?
