87 740Turbo No-Start 700 1987

Last summer I had replacing the fuel check valve, the engine tempature sensor, cleaned the idle air motor, and replacing the large hose (with a large hole in it) between the turbine and the inter cooler. The car usually started fine even on the coldest day all winter. Occasionally it would not start immediately, usually when it was damp, but the car always did start finally.

Not this time. It was raining (see my other post about my wiper bad ground problem).

Did have spark, pulled plugs and cleaned them, could smell gas on them. Substituted coil & Mass Air from another car, still no joy. Pulled the large hose from the Intercooler to the throttle body, sprayed a lot of throttle body cleaner. Car sounded like it was trying to fire, with the hose still disconnected. Sprayed more cleaner down into the idle air motor, on the theory that, oil from the turbo may be preventing this from working correctly.

Sprayed more cleaner into the throttle body, holding the throttle open, (there was oil in there). Hooked up the hose, and the car started, ran rough for a moment then smoothed to a normal idle and has been good since. Think I will carry a can of that cleaner with me from now on.

cheers......Hugh
