Better half & mom-in-law are driving back to Atlanta from NYC. I've just settled in to watch the "Madness" when I get a call saying there is something wrong w/the '88 240DL. "A guy who works for the railroad looked under the hood and thought it might be the power steering pump. I can't keep it on the road over 50 mph."
Okaaaaayyyyyyy. Rip a pwr. strg. pump out of a car in the driveway, load up the turbo wagon and I head north (it IS Sunday so no one is open and all the gas stations are self-serve). We meet at the NC/SC border and I look under the hood, nothing obvious, I drive the car around the parking lot and everything seems normal but the women are obviously wired & exhausted so I set them up in the wagon & I start driving the sedan. As soon as I get up to 55 mph the car starts vibrating & dancing around the highway! No vibration coming up through the steering wheel or the gear shift lever so I rule out front suspension and motor/tranny mounts. The rear end seems to have a mind of it's own, weaving back and forth in the lane and the vibration is felt through the seat. I back down to 50 and things smooth out and settle down.
I pull off the hwy. & look under the car but nothing is obviously loose or hanging off the car. However, the rear of the car rocks side to side VERY easily (almost as if there were no shocks in it). Not seeing any outward signs of danger I drive it back to GA @ 50 mph.
Any ideas? I'll put it up on the lift after I get home from work but thought I'd solicit any advice while I was waiting. Could shock failure lead to the symptoms I described? Or do you think there is something more insidious?
Thanks...
