VERY useful info link for instrument voltage stabilizer problems.... 140-160

In my quest to fix my defunct voltage stabilizer (used to power the fuel and temp gauges in my 145) I ran across this link which gives detailed info and diagrams on how to build your own solid-state version:

http://www.mgcars.org.uk/electrical/body_replacement.html

Contrary to what I have read, IPD DOES NOT offer a solid-state replacement for these regulators, and Volvo has discontinued the original part as well. I suppose one could find NOS if you looked hard enough. If you must have an old-fashined vibrator regulator (but why on God's green earth would you....?) you can get them at some parts houses carrying a vast selection of VW parts; the old bugs used them for their fuel gauges as well. Austin Veedub here has some VDO vibes, but they are $25.99 a piece.

I saw the reference to the LM317 voltage regulator on the Sweedish Embassy page, but it gave no detailed info on how to build one. This link has it.
