A/C 900 1997

1997, 75K mi. A/C has gradually (over the course of months)stopped blowing out cool air. My new mechanic said he has performed dye test and that evaporator is the problem. $850 to fix with Volvo parts. I always thought that if evaporator went bad, air would immediately go bad, not gradually over months. Am I incorrect in this assumption? Is it unusual for evaporator to go bad at 6yrs/75K miles? Should I double check the other componets? Thank you, Greystoke
