R-12 Charge it or change it? 200

All,

I tested out the AC on my 91 240 and the compressor runs intermitently. Low on gas no doubt. Guess it needs a pound of R-12. My mechanic tells me these cars are easy to convert, the kit runs $140 or so. We dont know what R-12 is going to cost this year. I plan on keeping this car as long as I can. So would you put in a pound if it cost $150, or put in the new stuff?
