Temperature Gauge question 1988 240GL 200

Temperature gauge on my duaghter's 88 240GL acts up sporadically. The other day she called to say it was up 'in the orange'. She stopped as soon as it climbed up. Went to see if I could find anything - nothing. Mixture in radiator, no leaks, thermostat seemed to be working. I started the car and the gauge read in the middle. Stayed this way for awhile (couple of days).

Yesterday she experienced the same thing. When it was high (not quite in 'danger') she turned on the heater and the gauge did drop a little.

Is this a sign of a thermostat getting tired? I have not cleaned the connection to the temperature sending unit - could this be the problem? Mixture (antifreeze/water) looks clean but don't know when it was flushed.

As always - thanks for the help.
