Is Warming Up the Car Worth It? 200

I've heard that, even in sunny California with our mild winters, that all cars should be allowed to warm up (ie temperature reach normal operating temperature) before driving it. The thinking is to minimize engine wear and damage. Is this true or just a waste of gas?
