smelling fuel from the exhaust 200

I recently picked a volvo off ebay and while it runs good gas can easily be smelled coming from the exhaust. I picked up a haynes to try and help me out but can't figure out where anything is actually located. My first thought was the car isn't getting enough air so thats what I looked up first. I think the lump sticking out of the pipe in front of the catilitic converter is supposed to be it, if so and assuming I can get it out where does the new one plug in, haynes operates on the premise that the old one still has wires, if this isn't the sensor where would I find it. I also tried to check the ai mass meter which looking at the guide seems to be connected to the box that holds the air filter? If so I don't even have one of these if not where would I find it? The last is that there is what appears to be a ground that connects to the throttle and out of the same wire cover is another wire which is plugged into another wire, unfortunately the other wire kstops just after this point and goes noplace though it obviously once did so. Any ideas where this goes or what it once did? Thanks for any assistance.
