R134 refit 200 1984

My mechanic informed me today that my AC was defunct and I should get the R134 refit, including the o-rings, evaporator, expansion valve and so on. The price he quoted rivaled the value of the car.

The Volvo refit kit can be had for about $210, but I've never fooled with AC. Assuming the garage discharges the remaining freon, how much of a job is installing the kit? Special tools needed?
