Oil pressure gauge 700

I bought a new oil pressure sensor for the block and an oil pressure gauge for the dash. I bought this brand new from Volvo. It does not work and I need to find out why. I have no oil pressure problem (I hope) but the gauge will not indicate anything, or rather too much. I am convinced that it is an electrical problem but am not an expert. The problem is: the gauge is wired as per instructions with power from behind cluster, green wire to sensor and earth from fuse box. When I switch ignition on, it goes all the way to the end of the scale and stays there. I have tried to disconnect the green wire from the sensor and that makes no difference. Do I have a faulty gauge or is there something else going on? This is a stock Volvo gauge to be mounted in the top right hand corner, the car is a 1987 turbo diesel and the gauge goes from 0 to 5 bar. I have noticed that as I switch the ignition on, the fuel gauge and the water temp gauge sort of energise, the neddle rasing slightly above the litte pin but my oil pressure gauge goes all the way to the very end and stays there.
