Been noticing a raw fuel smell just after shutting down the 285 for a little while. Looked & sniffed carefully around the external pump, filter, all the connections I could find--everything ok. Then I noticed a dangling line above the axle. Strong gas smell. Traced it to the rollover valve which connects to the filler pipe. Bentleys shows it's supposed to hook up to a line which terminates in the charcoal canister. I find another dangling line in the vicinity that smells vaguely of gas and disappears up into the frame rail near the gas tank. Hook 'em up; no more raw fuel smell at shut down. I figure the tank is now venting to the canister, as it should.
For some reason, I decide to look for the canister. Can't find one! Greg tells me where his is in his Converse wagon (factory Volvo location). Nada in mine. No dangling line, nothing! The car was originally a diesel.
So where is my tank now venting TO?? Where does that line that goes into the frame rail end up? What route does it take to get there? I'm thinking of disconnecting it and blowing air through it to see if I can find the other end. It's a translucent plastic line. I'm hoping someone can tell me what's up before I have to remove the cargo floor and go digging under all the extra layers of soundproofing I installed.
Maybe the line goes up under the headliner and drops back down to the firewall?
