FYI - tire woes 200 1988

A while back I posted a report on my '88 240 dancing around when it got to 50 mph. Without having been able to get underneath the car yet, I asked about shocks and bushings as possible problem areas. I have found the culprit. Yes, some bushings were worn (4 torque rod) as was the center carrier bearing snubber (pricey for a piece of rubber!) but the major fault was the rear left tire. It had been damaged while the car was stuck in a snow drift on the drive from ATL to NYC (funny how my wife and mom-in-law forgot to mention that little episode) and over time, chunks of rubber broke loose from it which unbalanced it to the point of being unsafe at 50 mph. It actually bounced around so violently it scraped against the top of the wheel well and wore off some of the undercoating.
