water pump installation knowledge wanted 200 1983

Greetings,

Cannot put off much longer replacing water pump on '83 245DL. Noisy bearings, bad coolant flow, etc. Also leaky spot, at "O" ring where cyl. head mates to the pump, which has been minor for several yrs.

Have a "new" (rebuilt) HEPU ("made in Germany") pump in box, came w/ gasket/fastner kit. Looks to be good quality.

Have some questions, as I'll be doing the job DIY style in a friend's garage over a pd. of at most 4 days and must be as "professional" as poss.

Only Volvo water pump I ever replaced was over a decade ago on a 142...did this deed also a while back on an '85 GM 4 cyl, all iron....I'm venturing into the unknown. Kinda.

Do have Haynes manual...but what it says isn't necessarily to be followed to the letter.

OK, these questions:

1)Should I use blue RTV on the big paper/fibre/whateverit'smadeof gasket? Both sides, as HEPU "fitting instructions" recommend?

2)Any other goops than blue silicone I might need at other connections? Would that "spark plug boot" grease be useful, or even petroleum jelly?

3)Why is upper hose to radiator stocked everywhere in town but lower one "special order?" I want to have two new ones at hand....but could I use something generic, they make this flexi-pipe radiator hose nowadays that is bendable....

4)Am I forgetting something? "Memory's getting so dim"....(Van Morrison)

Peace,
