Opinions on M-46 w/ Overdrive 700

I'm considering the purchase of an '89 745T (200K miles, "non-K" block) with manual M-46 Laycock Overdrive (5th gear is a button on the top of the shift knob -- do I have that right?).

I've driven the car, and it seems solid. But I'm hoping a fellow Brickboarder could share some real world experience with this transmission. Is it as reliable as the autobox in my 945T?

Also: How does that crazy thing work? And is there some advantage to this system over a standard 5-speed? (it seems like it's kinda re-inventing the wheel -- or the 5-speed transmission as the case may be).

Any and all input is appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
