AC Thermostatic type switch '86 240

HELP! I thought I'd solved the problem with my #12 fuse shorting out every time I turned on the AC. Two weeks ago, I dismantled the dash, looked for loose wiring/corrosion, cleaned the AC thermo switch connections really well, jiggled some wires, and "voila", the AC worked just fine til yesterday. Now it is blowing the #12 fuse again and nothing I do seems to help. Plan 2 was to replace the entire switch. I went to the junk yard today but when I tried to remove the switch I wanted from the "junker", I noticed that in addition to 4 connections, it seems to have a thermocouple wire (thick white wire)-- am I right? Where does it go and how do I remove it? (I know I really need to get my hands on an AC repair manual or the wiring diagram. Maybe I'm getting in over my head.) Thanks guys. Fix it Mom
