a/c compressor 700 1987

I have a 1987 740 GLE that the belt for the a/c compressor was offfor about a month. I have never had any problems with the a/c, however when I put the new belt on the compressor works fine at an idle but when the motor is revved the compressor switches off. Any suggestions??
