I had a fire in my 91 740 Turbo that started in the wiring harness that feeds the electric cooling fan at the A/C condenser on the front of the car. The fan relay is also fried. I suspect the fault was failed wire insulation which likely caused a short. Since there is a direct line to the battery in this harness, the grounded wire could easily overheat. I had trouble with failed insulation on my old '82 240 which caused nothing more than strange instrument readings, but this fire caused me some worry. I was fortunate to limit the fire damage to a few plastic body parts on the front, because I was able to stuff a chunk of snow up the front end. (April in Canada). Should I be worried about my 93 940 Turbo? Does Volvo wiring insulation fall apart after 12 years or so? Should it be a good practice to replace wire harness in this age of vehicle. I'd appreciate other people's experience on this one. In any case, I've decided to carry a fire extinguisher from now on.
