How does a timing gear approach death? 444-544

Today my faithful road warrior 544 sputtered and stuttered at highway speed. I pulled over and checked all the roadside things...points, plugs, rotor, cap, and carbs, and all seemed to be in good order. I then tried to limp back home (30 miles) I made it 14 miles before there was a lot of backfires, pops, and puffs of thick black smoke before the car died on the spot, and had to come home in shame on the back of a tow truck.
It is dark and raining so I am not looking at it yet, but my thoughts are timing gear, or valves.
any suggestions for where to begin the autopsy?
