240DL Overdrive Problem (1990 wagon) 200 1990

Hi. I have a continuing problem with the automatic transmission being unpredictable about going into overdrive (5th gear?) At about 45 mph, the transmission refuses to change gears, and I have to wait it out in the slow lane, with my emergency lights on, sometimes for many miles, before the car goes into proper gear, if ever. I had a Volvo mechanic check the kick down cable, as someone had suggested, and was shown that it was fine. We changed the transmission fluid, as it was time, and just in case. This did not make a difference. The relay light goes on, and when I was driving fine at 60 mph, I pressed the button--the yellow arrow lit up, and there was a straining from the engine, which stopped as soon as I pressed the button again. I assume that means the relay is working. I also checked the fuse in the fuse box that handles the overdrive, and it looked just fine. Interestingly, since the Boston weather has warmed a bit, it is going into overdrive more often, although still finicky, still sometimes refusing. Oddly, when I return from a 10 mile roundtrip each morning, with no high gear the whole way, after I round a curve and come up a slight incline to come back onto the highway, I usually end up smoothly, effortlessly, in proper high speed gear, sailing home with no effort. I am trying to avoid a huge bill from a transmission shop. Does anyone have any more thoughts on what might be wrong? Thanks very much.
