Pulled head,White speckles in exhaust port

I just pulled the head off my 242glti to do some stud work and saw some white specks of something inside the exhaust ports? What is this and anything to worry about.
Im about to do some mild porting anyway, and the car hasnt been driven in a while.
I can email someone pictures,but I cant attach them to this post for whatever reason.
