Hi All,
I recently replaced the struts and suspension components on my 97 960 Wagon. I then got everything aligned. About 3 weeks after the alignment I had a clunk in the right front side of the car when going over bumpy roads. The clunk has gotten progressively worse. After doing a "bounce test" the clunk seemed to be coming from the steering rack. I got under the car and pushed the rack up and down and sure enough it had some play in it. When I did the inner/outer tie rods I was relatively careful not to put to much force on the rack. Could I have done something wrong? (or the alignment shop?).
In anycase, my assumption is that the rack will need to be replaced. Is there any other solution/repair? If it needs to be replaced any tips beyond what is in the 700/900 FAQ?
In all my years of working on volvo's (740, 760, 960 and 960) I have never had a steering rack problem. My car has 70k miles on it.
As always, thank you in advance for your great advice!
Best,
Angus
