engine only turns about 350 degrees...what's going on? 700 1989

I cannot hand crank my 1989 740 engine more than 350 degrees in either direction. I think the engine failure is due to timing. So I checked and replaced the broken belt, after hear a a metallic "clank" when turning the engine over. For 2 weeks prior, I turned the engine over several times w/ no metallic sounds. I have been told that b/c this is a non-interference engine I should not have any bent or broken valves. Consistent w/ that I am able to turn the camshaft from the sprocket as much as I want. So now... this engine won't crank beyond 350: w/o the belt; w/ the belt; in park; in neutral; or w/ the rear wheels off the ground. Could I have a broken piston rod? I cannot figure ou what is binding the last approximately 10 degree range of movement. I can torque the crank bolt and remove it w/o have to externally hold the crank. Not a good sign huh? Need Help in Hawaii :(
