Worn Head Gasket? 200 1987

This is a new one for me, so I'm inquiring if anyone out there has heard of this.

Precaution: Went through the usual checks and eliminated electrical issues by attaching jumper cables to a second running car while testing. (to rule out battery/alternator)

Symptoms: Car runs fine for about 5-10 minutes then shuts off on its own. Starts right up after a couple of cranks, ... then 5-10 minutes, shuts off, and so on. No visible leaks observed. Not overheating.

Conclusion: Mechanic told me that the head gasket is probably worn, ... allows air into the block, creates a pressure (back pressure?) and that causes the car to cut out.

I'm looking for a second opinion here, ... haven't heard of this, but then again i'm no expert.

Thanks in advance.
