advice needed for carrying a canoe on 740 wagon 700

Hi All:

I have a '92 740 wagon w/factory luggage roof rack. I've tried to carry a canoe on it, but had real trouble with the tie-downs coming loose. The places to attach the tie-downs to aren't at the proper angles to get everything tight (tie-down points are located at the corners of the bumpers). Can anyone recommend a better way to tie down my canoe?
