Hey folks, I excitedly (and perhaps foolishly) bought a 1985 245Ti on eBay. The car is near Oakland, and I live in Ottawa, ON, CANADA. I've made researched arrangements for shipping the car to Champlain NY, about 2.5 hours from Ottawa, and would drive it home from there.
Here are some of the things I'm not sure about:
- how do we transfer ownership when I'm here and the current owner's in Cali?
- what type(s) of permit(s) do I need in order to drive the car from Champlain?
- will there be a problem bringing the car in through the NY-Quebec border, when the car will be registered in Ontario?
- what do I need when I cross the border to prove the car is now mine?
- there was mention of a "trip permit" -- memories of grade school -- when I spoke to the MTO [Ontario]. I'm not sure where I need one for: NY, CA, QC, ON??
Can anyone fill me in on the above items?
I've called Canada customs, and they say I need to send the actual border crossing location a copy of the title (???) at least 3 days in advance of my driving the car across.
What I DO know:
- I'll be paying both 7% GST & 6.1% duty at the border
- it'll need to be safetied and perhaps drive-clean tested before being registered in Ontario
- I'll be paying 8% PST when I register it
- that I should've researched this before I bid!
Thanks in advance,
Chris Breitner
