Water pump failed, and I bravely (foolishly ?) decided to replace it myself, although I have no experience. Probably started out wrong by buying a pump at Auto Zone. Followed the excellent advice in the 700 FAQ, things went very well, until it came time to actually install the new pump. Here I put the two nuts on loosely, "levered" the pump up to tighten the seal with the block, and tightened the two nuts. Problem is, the other 3 holes in the pump did not align exactly with the holes in the block. I could tell by feeling in there with a small screwdriver that the pump was too far south. So, I loosen the bolts and try the "lever" move again (more than once). No luck. I talk to the Auto Zone guy and he says this is a very hard thing to do and he has done one before but he used a "third hand" jack device to hold the pump up in place. So I actually try this, and I celebrate when I get one of the three bolts to go on (the one on top). Then I un-celebrate when I cannot get the two bottom bolts to go in. I ran out of time, and put everything back together, and gave it a try with the two bolts not in place. Incredibly, so far, it does not leak, and the pump is working fine. Car has 206k miles and I look to get another 25k or so from it before moving on. Is the poor fit due to cheap pump? Suggestions?
