Cruise control 200 1988

The Haynes manual mentions nothing about cruise control. I bought this 88 240DL over a year ago and the CC has never worked. Is there a better manual than Haynes that might have a diagnostic sequence for cruise control? What are some of the more common reasons for a lack of cruise control that I might check in the meantime?
