We recently purchased a 1983 244 GL. The previous owner indicated a tendency to die unexpectedly. The local dealer was unable to reproduce the problem. I have now been able to, and am looking for tips as to what may be the problem. Generally, if the car is successfully driven over a couple of miles or so, there doesn't seem to be a problem during that drive. However, if is driven short distances (say, 1-5 miles), parked for short time (say, 30-60 minutes) and then driven again, it tends to die within the first mile. On one occassion it died when started for the first time and driven about 1 mile.
When it is afflicted, the engine RPM varies erratically; then all power is lost; the dash lights, etc., still come on. AFter a 15-30 minute rest, all is well again.
It has been quite rainy or humid here the last several days, and the problem seems to be more likely in humid or wet weather, but I haven't absolutely determined this to be a factor; the short drive/short rest/short drive/death cycle seems more consistent. But, like I say, humidity does appear to be a factor.
Any thoughts on possible culprits will be greatly appreciated.
