I recently replaced the inner tie rod ends on
a ZF steering rack in a 1990 760. The portion of the old tie rod that screws into the rack was "pinned" in place with what looked like a whack with a punch in a cutout at the end of the rack. After installing the new one I did the same, using a punch and a 3 pound sledge (lightly). One of the ends has begun to unscrew (gulp). Does the steering rack need to be removed to be able to whack the rod with enough force to deform the end enough without damaging the rack? If the rack does need to be removed, I'll probably put in a rebuilt, as long as its out. Any comments on rebuilt rack sources? Jorgen's are $225 and FCP's are $195. Thanks for any comments!!
