vent tube on 240 axel? 200 1989

In the process of re-bushing the entire rear end of my 89 240 project wagon, I I knocked a small tube out of the body frame that extends to the rear axel tube.

The end of this line has a short plastic tube that inserts into a rubber bushing above the axel in the body near the back of the gas tank. Naturally when I tried to place the rubber bushing that holds this line - the bushing fell into the body of the car.

What does this tube do? And how important is it?? I am assuming it's an air vent - checked my other wagon and sedan too! Both have them - wanted to make sure the 89 wagon had not mutated on its own! - LOL

Good news is that I have everything back in my car except the driveshaft and then must bleed the brakes. Then it hits the road after a month on jack stands!!
