Clean or change evaporator 200 1988

I am in the process of changing over to R-134. I am trying to decide on wether to change the evaporator. Will it suffice just to clean the old one of any debris blocking it? Is there a significant advantage to changing the evaporator? Also, can I wait to have the system evacuated after I put the new equipment in? (I busted a hose so there is nothing to evacuate but old oil and maybe some moisture.) Thanks
