I have a 1992 wagon w/ABS and automatic, and a seriously clunking rear end. All the bushings are solid, the u-joints are solid, the rear bearings are ok, nothing loose with the calipers or rotors. The noise has to be internal to the differential, and it's getting louder and more frequent.

I've located a replacement rear axle. The donor car would be a 1990 with automatic, no ABS.

The guy who owns the donor car thought there were match-up problems. He was most concerned about the speedo sensor. They look different on the two units.

The owner of the shop that's going to install it for me says the sensor shouldn't be a problem. If necessary, he'll keep the sensor plug from the donor rear end and splice the wires.

Buuuuut...suppose the sensor signal is calibrated differently between the 1990 and the 1992. That would foul up the speedometer reading just like changing tire sizes or rear axle ratio would. Does having ABS tie into this possibility?

Also--Someone on the board recently said that all 240 automatics had the same rear end ration--3.73/1. The owner of the shop says that "some" wagons had a different ratio, but he wasn't sure what years or how much different.

Can anyone answer these questions?
