1989 240 GL - A little help B4 my book arrives. 200 1989

Hello,

Well, I bought the 1989 240 GL with 230K for $1800. While the Bentleys is coming in the mail, I have a couple questions...

My passenger side brake light doesn't light up. It's the kindof bulb with two wicks in it. Here's what I've done:

Turned on headlights - this makes it half light up.
Tested the insert assymbly on the other side. Works great.
Tested the lightbulb, replaced light bulb, etc.
Tried insert assymbly from other side, still doesn't work.
Tried to clean the copper surface. Not sure what I should be doing? Sand paper?
Voltage tested both sides, and they both work the same:
When parking lights are on, the top contact is routes to the other two.
When the brake lights are on, the right side contact routes to the other two. (I might have those mixed up)

I don't know what to look at next! Any suggestions? The dash light comes on when brakes are depressed, and there's some problem with the red dash lights flickering.

Before I bought it I had the engine temp. taken and it stayed the same for about a 1/2 hour, only varying by a few degrees when revved up and idled. The temperature guage itself didn't stay pegged in the orange, it went up and down at random. When I was on the freeway it went down to half, then went back up, with no change in my driving. I disconnected it and it went down, and grounded it and it went all the way up. So what is that problem?

Thanks for your help folks!
