Need Help with Rust on Undercarriage 200 1987

I just discovered a small rust spot (about 1/2"X 2") on the undercarriage of my '87 240. It is directly under the driver's seat about 8 inches from the door. It appears that an impact softened or cut through the undercoating and rust set-in as most of the u/coating in the area of the rust spot is still in tact. I did not detect any other rust spots. Any suggestions for repairs and any idea how long before it becomes a major problem?? Thanks.
