244 GL won't start - just goes 'tunk' 200

Looking for advice on a 244GL that won't start. It doesn't get anywhere near turning over. Just makes a loud 'tunk' noise, then nothing. Sounds like the starter is catching on something. The car started making a rattling noise earlier that day, which slowed/sped up as I did.

I'd really appreciate some advice!
