After about an hour and a half drive on the highway, I parked and my 81 242 wouldn't start back up. I tried while it was hot, spent the night and tried again- nothing. (The engine would crank, but not catch) I noticed that the fule pump wasn't primimg and kicked myself for not getting in to have the in-tank pump replaced sooner. But, in a last gasp effort and with little hope, I went to the fuse box, gave them all a spin and pulled a few out that looked esp. corroded on the tips, wiping them off but not replacing the fuse itself. First try and it started up.
So- in addition to sanding all the contacts, I'm wondering what your 'secrets' are for fuse-box maintenance. I replaced all the fuses just a few months ago, so they should have been in pretty decent shape. It has been pretty wet here in DC for the last few weeks/months, but I don't have any leaks etc. Should I put a small layer of silicone gel or something on the contacts? Do you have a favorite brand?
