oil starvation 200

My daughter drove her '87 240 with an oil leak until it almost ran out. She was on her way to my house, stopped at a stop sign, and the car died. Wouldn't restart so she called me. I went after her, and it was obvious that the timing belt had broken. I towed it home, opened it up and discovered that the crank pulley had stripped the teeth off the belt. Hmmm. I put a socket on the cam and discovered it didn't want to turn. Uh-oh. I pulled the dipstick and had to add three quarts to get it to full. I loosened up the cam bearings and it freed right up. Question is, does anyone have any experience doing the cheapo (er, nothing but timing belt replacement) in a situation like this, given that these engines are sooo tough? I know I SHOULD do a complete head job, but I'd rather put it off until she's through with the car (it's actually a backup car of mine, on loan to her until she buys her own) and I can do it leisurely. Anyone been through something like this?
