Third Brake Light Not Responding 200 1993

The third brke light stopped working. I replaced the bulb twice (for good measure), everything looked clean yet it still won't respond when the brakes are applied. My local volvo independent garage said it could take up to 3 hours and $200.00 to diagnose and repair this. Anybody out there have any possible cheaper experience/solutions? The dash light coming on everytime I apply the brakes is a minor irritant.
